Catherine graduated from Elsenburg in 1991. Apprenticeships at various local cellars interspersed with international experiences in France (Burgundy and St-Emilion- Bordeaux), USA ( California and Oregon) and Australia.
Resident winemaking positions followed at four wineries in Stellenbosch and Paarl before embarking on a solo career in 2007 establishing and running the wine business. At this time, she was instrumental in formalising the Garagiste Movement which has gone on to become very successful in South Africa. Although she no longer actively participates, she has been inducted as an honorary member.
As Cellar master at various wineries, she has garnered many local and international awards, including 5 star Platter Wine Guide and Tim Atkinh (MW) accolades for her Pinot Noir. The total commitment to detail and the hands-on approach in vineyards and wine production are evident in the unique character of Cathy’s range.
In addition to a full wine schedule, Cathy enjoys mountain hiking ( Base camp Everest in Tibet and the Annapurna in Nepal being some of her highlights), mountain biking, gardening with herbs and fynbos, exotic travel, tennis and entertaining friends and family.
Shawn first joined the team in 2010 as an apprentice for the harvest season. He was so inspired by winemaking that he was keen to work the harvest for another season in 2011. Fascination and inspiration turned to passion and Shawn is now fully employed as Assistant Winemaker. Prior to joining our team, Shawn worked at the Cape Town Harbour in the Fruit Terminals involved in overseeing the shipping of containers. However, born in Grabouw, the pull back to the Valley saw him start up a small Orchard and Vineyard planting business that has successfully seen many a vine and fruit tree nurtured under his expertise. He is married to Stanlyn and has a daughter Hope.
Shareholder & Manager
Greg, who co-owns an engineering company, never imagined a foot stomp party in his garage in 1996 would ever become more than a few old photos on Facebook! In 2004, Greg decided to “engineer” a small batch of Zinfandel from the Swartland, all made by hand. Greg is a keen runner and cyclist when not in the cellar.
Shareholder & Cellar Logistics
Jonathan, Catherine’s son, joined the team in May 2011 as the shares were passed on after the tragic death of his father Peter ( founder shareholder) in April 2011. As a small boy, he participated in the annual foot stomp celebrations. He has become involved with Cellar logistics, IT design and grape harvest management.
Jono is very passionate about all things related to the ocean – surfing being his main passion.
Jeff is one of the original Barefoot quartet, a long time wine fanatic and garagista for 20 years. Now based in Perth, he keeps tabs on the Antipodean wine trends.
When he is not experimenting with the latest vintage in his garage, he can be found wave skiing, golfing and works as a consulting hydro-geologist.
In 2018, Jeff started a wine making correspondence course through Davis University in California and plans to visit wineries around the world to hone his skills.
